If the walls could talk, we'd all probably be a little nervous.
One of my favorite things to do at Disney is to simply people watch. When we lived in the Tampa Bay area during covid we would take our littles to Disney sometimes multiple times a week. Church was over on Sunday and there were still reservations for Hollywood Studios - let’s go. It was early release on Monday and Magic Kingdom still had reservations - even better.
Our girls were 7, 4, and 2 at the time. My husband would take our 7 and 4 year old and go ride all the fun rides and my two year old and I would simply sit on a bench somewhere outside of the attraction and people watch. And it hit me … if these parks could talk … what would they say?
Not because Disney is hiding some great secret but because imagine the stories those sidewalks, castles, benches, and attractions have witnessed over the years.
They've seen first dates that turned into fifty year marriages.
They’ve seen marriage proposals.
They’ve seen first steps.
They’ve heard first words.
Tiny toddlers in princess dresses who now bring their own children.
Grandparents who insisted they were "just here for the grandkids" before becoming the most competitive rider on Toy Story Mania.
Parents who swore they weren't buying another popcorn bucket…and somehow left with three.
They've watched exhausted moms push strollers that somehow weighed more than a compact car. They've seen dads become human pack mules, carrying backpacks, bubble wands, souvenirs, and one child who suddenly forgot how to walk the second they left the park.
If Disney Parks could talk, I imagine they'd laugh with us far more than they'd laugh at us.
Cinderella Castle might whisper, "I've watched thousands of little girls believe they were princesses for a day and I've watched even more grown women remember that it's okay to dream again."
The Haunted Mansion would probably sigh and say, "I've heard every version of 'I'm not scared' right before someone screamed louder than everyone else."
Spaceship Earth might smile and remind us, "Every family writes a story. Yours is just another beautiful chapter."
And Main Street, U.S.A.?
I think Main Street would simply say, "Slow down."
Because it has watched millions of families rush toward the next Lightning Lane, the next parade, the next snack, the next reservation...only to realize years later that the moments they remember most weren't on the itinerary at all.
They were the sticky hugs.The sleepy shoulders.The spontaneous dance parties.The castle picture where someone blinked.
The puddle jumping.The laughter while waiting in a 45 minute line.The child who reached for your hand one more time before deciding they were too big to.
Maybe that's the real magic Disney has been quietly watching all along.
Not the fireworks.
Not the attractions.
Not even the castle.
The people.
Because the rides are wonderful but they're really just the backdrop for the memories we make together.
And maybe that's why we keep going back.
Not because the parks have changed us.
But because they quietly remind us how quickly the people we love are growing.
If Disney Parks could talk, I don't think they'd tell us to ride one more attraction.
I think they'd simply smile and say...
"Don't miss the magic standing right beside you."
