The Beauty of a Life That Doesn’t Fit in One Box

How Many Hats Do You Wear?

Seriously, stop for a minute and think about it.

How many hats do you wear?

Not just the titles people give you, but all the roles you carry every single day.

For me, I'm a wife. A mom. A co-lead pastor. A pastor's wife (and yes, those are absolutely two different roles). For the last three years, I was also a kindergarten teacher. I help families navigate life and find success. I'm a runner. A Disney lover. A coffee addict. A makeup enthusiast. A friend. A daughter. A mentor.

That's a lot of hats.

And honestly?

I love every single one of them. Most days, I wouldn't trade any of it. But for years, I viewed each role as a completely separate part of my life.

There was "Mom Whitney."

Then there was "Pastor Whitney."

Then there was "Teacher Whitney."

And somewhere in there was "Wife Whitney."

Every role had its own expectations, responsibilities, and pressures. Every role seemed to demand a different version of me.

And because of that, I spent a lot of time asking myself impossible questions.

Am I being a good enough mom?

Am I giving enough to the church?

Am I serving my students well?

Have I spent enough time with my husband?

Did I get my run in today?

Have I had enough coffee to function?

Did I at least remember to put on mascara before leaving the house?

The list never ended.

The more hats I added, the more exhausted I became trying to keep them all organized.

I was constantly switching.

Mom hat on.

Teacher hat off.

Pastor hat on.

Runner hat off.

Wife hat back on.

And the truth is, it was exhausting. Not because any one role was too much, but because I was trying so hard to keep them separated. Then one day I realized something. I am only one person. Just one. God didn't create ten different versions of Whitney. He created one.

One woman with different callings.

One woman with different responsibilities.

One woman with different passions.

But still one woman.

And when that realization finally sank in, something shifted.

Instead of trying to balance separate identities, I began to embrace the fact that all those roles were simply different expressions of who God created me to be.

The same compassion that helps me as a pastor helps me as a parent.

The same patience I used in the classroom helps me in ministry.

The same perseverance I learned while running helps me in marriage.

The same joy I find in Disney reminds me to embrace wonder and create memories with my family.

The same faith I preach on Sundays carries me through Mondays.

None of these pieces competes with one another. They complement one another. They make me who I am. And let me tell you, the freedom that came from that realization was incredible. The stress began to lift. The pressure began to ease.

I stopped feeling like I had to be everything to everyone all the time.

I stopped trying to switch hats every five minutes.

I stopped striving to become the perfect version of every role.

Instead, I simply focused on being faithful.

Faithful as a mom.

Faithful as a wife.

Faithful as a pastor.

Faithful as a friend.

Faithful as the woman God created me to be.

Because the goal isn't perfection. The goal isn't balancing every role flawlessly. The goal is faithfulness. Maybe today you're feeling buried under all the hats you wear. Maybe you're a mom, employee, volunteer, caregiver, friend, wife, ministry leader, business owner, chauffeur, chef, and referee all before lunch. I get it.

But what if you stopped trying to separate all those pieces of yourself?

What if instead of viewing them as competing priorities, you saw them as threads woven together to create the unique person God designed you to be?

Because you aren't failing at wearing all the hats. You were never meant to wear them one at a time. You were meant to simply be you. And that is more than enough. As Timothy Q. Mouse put it “The very things that hold you down are going to lift you up.” Just be YOU.

XOXO Whitney
